Le Système Cospas-Sarsat fournit des alertes de détresse et des données de localisation aux services de recherche et de sauvetage (SAR) du monde entier pour venir en aide aux usagers en détresse dans les environnements maritime,  aéronautiques et terrestre.  Le Système comprend :

  • des satellites en orbite terrestre basse-altitude (LEOSAR) et en orbite géostationnaire (GEOSAR) qui traitent et/ou relaient les signaux  transmis par les balises de détresse;

  • des stations de réception au sol (LUT) qui traitent les signaux des satellites pour localiser les balises;

  • les Centres de contrôle de mission (MCC) qui fournissent des données d’alerte de détresse aux services SAR.

Le Système Cospas-Sarsat peut détecter et localiser les balises de détresse qui opèrent sur la fréquence 406 MHz.  Le traitement des signaux des balises analogues transmettant sur la fréquence 121.5 MHz a cessé le 1er février 2009.
